Prince Siddhartha was twenty-nine years old when his life changed. In carriage rides outside his palaces he first saw a sick person, then an old man, then a corpse. This shook him to the core of his being; he realized that his privileged status would not protect him from sickness, old age, and death. When he saw a spiritual seeker — a mendicant “holy man” ―  the urge to seek the peace of mind arose in him.

At the age of 29 years, Siddhartha left his home. This Incident is known as Mahabhiniskramana. He went to the Anoma river and became a monk to hear the bank of Anoma river.

⇒ He first went to

  1. Rajgriha where he met Alar Kalam (teacher), taught techniques of meditation to him. Then he reached to
  2. Vaishali where hi meet Rudrak Ramputra (Teacher). However, after six years of this, the prince felt only frustration
  3. Eventually, he realized that the path to peace was through mental discipline. At Bodh Gaya, in the modern Indian state of Bihar, he sat in meditation beneath a ficus tree, “the Bodhi tree,” where he got enlightenment after their meditation of 6 years on the bank of Niranjana River. That incident in Buddhism is known as Nirvana.

Who Was Buddha?

Buddha is not a name, but a title. It is a Sanskrit word that means “a person who is awake.” What a Buddha is awake to is the true nature of reality.

Buddha gave his first preachment (Dharmachakrapravartana) in Sarnath, Varanasi. He founded a Buddhist Union in Sarnath to follow 3 Ratans

⇒ Buddha gave his maximum no. of preachment in Shravasti in the Pali language.

⇒ In The Last Stage of his life, he reached Kushinagar & gave his last preachment to subheccha. He then gave his preachment to Lund (Lauhar) where he ate pork gives by Lund due to dysentery he died in Kushinagar (483 BC), at the bank of Hiranyavati river. That incident in Buddhism is known as Mahaparinirvana.

Third Buddhist Council – 251 BC

Fourth Buddhist Council – 78 A.D/ 81 A.D

  • V. Chairman → Ashwaghosh
  • Work → Buddhism divided into 2 communities.

24 Tirthankara of Jainism

1st → Rishabhdeva

  • Bharat (son) → Bharatvarsh
  • Gonteshwar {Bahubali} (son) → Statue → Shrawan Belgola

23rd → Parshvanatha

  • Born in Varanasi
  • He may have lived in the 8th or 7th century BC
  • He died on Saneda Hill when he was 100 years old.
  • 4 Mahavratha:-
  1. Ahimsa (non-violence)
  2. Satya (truth)
  3. Asteya (no stealing)
  4. Parigraha (no acquisition)

24th & Last Tirthankara –

MAHAVIR

  • Birth → 540 BC Kundagram, Vaishali.
  • Childhood name → Vardhamana
  • Father → Siddartha  (Head of Jnatrika Clan)
  • Mother → Trishla (Sister of Lichchhavi chief Chetaka)
  • Wife → Yashoda
  • Daughter → Anojja/ Priyadarshana
  • Son -in- law → Jamali
  • At the age of 30 years, Vardhamana left his home by taking permission from his elder brother, Nandivardhana.
  • He met Makhali Goshal, Who became his first student before enlightenment. After enlightenment → First student – Jamali
  • Ajivaka community → by Makhali Goshal.  [ Bindusara was known as a follower of Ajivaka community]
  • After meditation for 12 years, he got enlightenment in Jimbhikagrama village under a sal tree near the bank of the river Rijupalika. This incident in Jainism known as  Kaivalya. Thereafter, he was called Mahavira, Jina, Jitendriya (one who conquered his senses), Nigrantha (free from all bonds) and Kevalin.
  • First, the disciple was his son-in-law Jamali.
  • The first female disciple was Chandana.
  • In the ancient period, Mathura was the main center of Jainism in Magadha.
  • Mahavir Swami appointed his 11 disciples to spread Jainism in Magadha(11 Gandharas). ⇒All died except – Arya Sudharman after Mahavir death → 1st chairman of Jain Unit.
  • 468 BC, Mahavir Swami preached his teachings for 30 years and died at Pava (near Rajagriha) aged 72.

In 300 BC,

  • When Bhadrabahu left for South India, Sthulabahu remained in the North with his followers.
  • Sthulabahu changed the code of conduct and said that white clothes could be worn. Thus, split Jainism into two sects:
    1. Swetambaras: White-clad; Northerners
    2. Digambaras: Sky-clad (naked); Southerners

First Jainism council – 300 BC

  • Place → Pataliputra
  • Ruler → Chandragupta Maurya
  • Chairman → Sthulabahu (Sthulbhadra)
  • 289 BC →  Chandragupta Maurya died due to toSallekhana/Santhara.
  • Work → Jainism divided into two communities

  • Held at Vallabhi in Gujarat in 512 CE.
  • Ruler → No proof
  • Chairman →  Devardhigani.
  • Work → Teaching of Jainism was scripted during this council.
